State Rep. Sailor resigns seat
From staff reports
State Rep. Ron Sailor [D-Lithonia], who represents parts of DeKalb and Rockdale counties, plead guilty March 18 to federal money laundering charges.
Sailor, 33, agreed to step down from his District 93 seat in the Legislature.
According to a statement from U.S. Attorney David Nahmias’ office, Sailor was arrested Dec. 19 after taking $300,000 from an undercover agent at an Atlanta hotel.
The former lawmaker thought he was cleaning the cash for a Florida drug dealer. Sailor entered his plea before U.S. District Court Judge Jack Camp. He is expected to be sentenced May 22.
Even before Tuesday’s revelations, Sailor had been making waves.
Last summer, the former legislator was arrested in Gwinnett County and charged with passing more than $1,100 in bad checks and allegedly driving on a suspended license. According to the State Ethics Commission, Sailor has been late or didn’t file more than 30 mandated reports since 2000.
Because Sailor owes more than $5,000 in fines, the commission was conducting an investigation.
Last week, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sailor has missed 211 of 233 votes on bills, resolutions and procedural matters on the floor during the first 30 days of session.
