Apartment fire leaves 12 displaced

Lightning may be responsible for an apartment fire in Stone Mountain that left one firefighter injured and 12 people displaced on June 24.

According to DeKalb County Fire Battalion Chief Christopher Morrison, firefighters arrived at the Landmark at Mountainview apartments on Woodbend Drive at approximately 7 p.m. that Friday evening.

“We don’t know how it started right now…one witness said she saw some lightning come down and strike the building and then it started smoldering,” Morrison said.

A firefighter, whose name Morrison was not at liberty to release, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after being hit by debris after a breezeway collapsed.

According to Morrison, no civilians were injured and firefighters at the scene had the blaze out by approximately 7:35 p.m.

The fire burned through six units on the top floor of the apartment building.

Too sad to all the family. Bad enough that everybody is trying to keep a roof over their heads. My prayers are with the families. Too much going on nowadays.

It is great to see that nobody was injured in this fire! I hate to see apartments (and homes) catching fire in such a tough economy. Thanks for the post.
