Update: Mother, three sons arrested on murder charges

A mother and her three sons have been arrested in connection with a shooting that left one teenager dead and another in critical condition, DeKalb County Police said.

Viola Goodman, 52, James Fanning, 20, and Shontonious Hawkins, 25, were arrested the evening of March 2 at a home on Willa Way in Decatur. Another son, 16, whom police said is believed to be the person responsible for firing the shots, turned himself in at police headquarters just before 3 p.m. on March 3.

All four suspects are charged with murder and aggravated assault.

Jernard Wheeler, 13, died at an area hospital after being shot during an incident March 2 at 2717 Macafee Road in Decatur at approximately 2 p.m., police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said. Another teenager who was shot remains in an area hospital in critical condition.

Two groups of people were walking in opposite directions on Mcafee Road when words were exchanged and shots were fired, police said. Detectives believe there has been an ongoing dispute between the parties involved in the shooting, Parish said.

First-apparance hearings were held the night of March 3.

This is an absolute shame I'd like to point out the south police precinct is on the corner of candled an glennwood less than a mile away! And it's definitely Decatur! Decatur county is in south west ga a town called bainbridge but oh yes this was in Decatur no two ways about it!

Wow I have been saying this whole time that stupid people should be legally prevented from breeding! I agree with everything you said. The apple didn't even fall from the tree here and it blows my mind charges were dropped against this mother who raised a degenerate offspring in a manner in which murdering children and attempting to flee is acceptable. This poor child is dead and the mother who is ultimately responsible is free to breed yet again and raise more child murdering degenerate children.

My question is why were they not at school??? At the age of 13 and 16 you should be at school from the hours of 8am to at least 4pm this accident happened around 2 in the evening!!!

How about this: Yes, the government and american dream may be murky (at best) BUT ULTIMATELY, at the end of the day...the parents are responsible for their offspring. It seems the type of parents who claim 'responsbility' for their children when there is a governmental benefit to be had are not the type of parents who believe THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE for their child's upbringing...always, someone else's fault. BULLSHIT...it is the individual;s fault...part of a parents job is to make sure their children fully understand there is CONSEQUENCES in life and it is not a 'rap song"

McAffe, oh McAffee
We used to walk your street in glee
To the market, or daycare, or to get a haricut
It did not matter if the sun was down or up
And now we dare not go out
For fear of who is out and about
May the streets one day be safe
From all this roaming waste.

it's sad that this had to happen to hear someone voice or oppinion. regardless of the county we live, at the end of the day, we are still one in unity...neighbor, friend, family, relatives, co-workers, we are still the same. I look at this situation like it is my own child and all i can say is that we as individuals need help. We need help to understand what unity is and what it stands for. we cannot run from death, for it can be anyone and at anytime. However, we can make a change to help educate and understand each other and the people that we have around us. It is too late to point blame or make excuses as to why this happen, instead let us use this as a learning example.. help, heal, love, forgive and move on!

We need to go back to the "way things use to be". Parents looking out for the kids in the neighborhood. All one big family. WE allowed our neighborhood to get like this. We need to (1). get to know out neighbors, (2) start doing things with other people that live on your block (3) get involved in your childs school. Don't let Satan get his way. The beginning of the destruction of the world, begins in the family break down, then the neighborhood, then the city, then the state, then the country, and last the world. We need to take back our families, our neighborhood and our world. Do not let Satan have his way. Bring more peace to this doomed world

Yes Lenean you are so correct in your comments. District Three in DeKalb County is the Murder Capitol of DeKalb County with no other District even close ( eight years in a row). Commissioner Larry Johnson is my District Three Commissioner. He is also the Presiding Officer of The DeKalb Board of Commissioners. He is also a Full Time Employee of Fulton County. He also was re-elected with no opposition. What's a person to do in District Three ?

Many of DeKalbs Elected Officials have learned that, you go to the Right Church, visit some others, stop by the Senior Centers on your way home and you're re-elected regardless of the Blood Bath that occures in your District Weekly ?

i'm station in Iraq, and the fighting here is still going on. I see that nothing has not changed since I left home last year, still the same old mess, young kids killing one another. If you want some action please join the military and get your hands dirty for a while, cause theres a lot of killing going on over here, and I'll be glad to let you have my spot over here. I see that we still can't get alone with one another no matter who, what where, when or why. Young kids killing each other and you got your parents in the mess with you,man thats crazy.

I hate when these high and mighty "City of Decatur" people never want it reported that anything bad ever happens over there...30030, 30032, 30034 all say DECATUR!!!!!

Does it bother anyone that this was a MOTHER and her 3 CHILDREN and that both groups were walking in a public place carrying concealed weapons? At what point do parents no longer present themselves as role models? At what point should taxpayers continue to be responsible for cruddy adults? This is why we have high taxes! This is why we have violence in schools! This is why our kids are flunking out. I'm a Dekalb county resident with a teenager in a Dekalb county school. I am also an inner-city APS teacher. I'm tired of everyone pointing the finger up. I work hard, but I can't do your job. If you can't do it, stop having kids.

Murder in 30032!!! Not surprised! This area has high stats in everything! AND commenter was quick to let everyone know...this didn't happen in Decatur County, but Decatur Georgia! Do it matter? Well, I guess so and that's why the divide, tell Commissioner Larry Johnson to do his job or go home! This area continues to be a troubled area with no real leadership...We talked for months at the so called 30032 Summit...ALL TALK, NO ACTION, but besides the efforts of DICF - DeKalb Initiative for Children and Families.

The Champion, of all news outlets, should know that this was NOT "in Decatur". It was "in" DeKalb County.

This is so sad. So many young children being killed by other young people. All over America, not just in South DeKalb County.

The lack of Social Programs ? The lack of Leadership from our Elected Officials ? Are these the causes ? The Break Down of The American Family and The American Dream ? Lack of Parental Guidance ? Are these the causes ?

There comes a time people when every citizen must rise up and put their boots on to do the work that needs to be done. We can't just sit on our hind legs and blame everybody else. You have got to be involved with your children and trust few. Drugs are too accesable to our youth.

One thing is for sure in DeKalb County. We do not have enough Police Officers and can ill afford to lose this New Recruit Class of Officers. These soon to be Police Officers need to continue their training and be sworn in as a part of DeKalbs Finest.

Same in the Fire Department.

But the DeKalb BOC and DeKalb CEO can well afford to pay the New DeKalb Information Media Rep $118,000.00 - Woh ! That ain't right ! And continue to give others huge raises by "job reclassification".

DeKalbs Police Officers put their lives on the line 24-7-365 while others who might get a paper cut doing their job make three and four times their salary ! It just ain't right !
