Vickie, it's called "surge capacity" and it looks like we have zero.
Any emergency plan includes contingency surge planning for scenarios that are unexpected, unusual, but possible--think of CDC planning for a terrorist smallpox attack. A lot more unlikely than snow and ice in winter, but there is a plan, it is practiced to the extent possible, and it is reviewed periodically.
DeKalb, on the other hand, has a plan to say "well, we can't afford to BUY trucks, and we haven't thought of anything else we might do. Except avoid making up as many days of school as possible."

We don't have bad winters like this every year. How long does an elected official stay in office with Dekalb County? Probably not long enough to experience another BAD Winter. So, you have to re-evaluate every so often.

First of all, I would like to know if any of you who have already left comments have lived in Atlanta, GA all of your life. This is probably the worst since 1989. Why because I was born here. The most difficult one was in 1972 when Carter was the Governor. We had "NO POWER" for a week along with ice on the roads. Atlanta has really improved since this time. Shut up about who needs to be fired. Thank you,MARTA for not sending the buses out which may have caused more harm than good. Shovel your driveway and HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR. BE THANKFUL THAT YOU HAD POWER. If we had not had a gas stove in 1972, we would not have had any warm food.

It's not too hard for northerners to deal with, but here in Atlanta, we have icy hills. Side roads are never treated much in the north and we neighbors would work together and dig, salt with rock salt and shovel to break up areas to get out into main roads. Our municipalities SHOULD have been better prepared with all of the advance notice, but WE can help each other also. Shovel it!

Wow, Mark. Maybe if the 'idiot' Ga DOT workers weren't helping your 'hood out, they could of spent more time on the interstates.

Idiot Ga DOT does little or nothing to change road conditions while Atlanta shuts down under all this ice GA DOT did nothing. Instead of treating and deiceing roads they CLOSED them. They traeted ONE INTERSECTION in my neighborhood on N Druid Hills Rd then left almost all the road impassable covered in snow/ice...
FIRE THEM ALL AND HIRE SOMEONE WHO CAN MEET THE PROBLEM WITH RESULTS...

The Violent Swings in Weather will only get worse = Trust me on that ! So be better prepared.

And Yes, No City, No County and No State in the Deep South can afford to Own vast numbers of these expensive limited to snow removal types of equipement. However DeKalb County the third largest County in the State was said on the News to have only two Plows and three Spreaders, sounds a little low in numbers to me.

Leadership from The State Capitol of Georgia, to The Ga DOT, to The DeKalb Board of Commissioners to the DeKalb CEO once again have left the Tax Paying Citizens of DeKalb County to fend for themselves.

NO COMPREHENSIVE PLAN = Nothing new for DeKalb residents.

DeKalb County = Leadership without a clue = A County in Crisis !

These roads are NOT closed "due to the excessive snow and ice this week." The snow and ice were done THREE DAYS AGO. The roads are closed due to a failure to have a contingency plan for snow and ice occurring to the extent WE KNOW can happen every 10 years or so.
This doesn't happen regularly but it does happen enough that maybe we should have some plan other than 'the sun will eventually come out' just in case it does happen.
