DeKalb County commission seat a step up for former state legislator

When Stan Watson takes office in January, he will be a freshman county commissioner, but he brings 12 years of political experience as a state legislator to DeKalb’s legislative body.

And Watson does not consider the move from the Georgia House of Representatives to the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners to be a political step down.

“Most of my friends say this is a step up,” Watson said. As a state representative, Watson represented 25,000 people, but as the county commissioner for Super District 7, he will represent about 322,000 voters who are concerned about trash pickup, code enforcement, public safety, zoning and local ordinances that affect quality of life.

“This is where the rubber meets the road as it relates to constituent services,” said Watson, a former chairman of DeKalb’s delegation to the state’s House of Representatives.

Watson was first elected to represent state House District 91 in 1997. In 2008 Watson left to run for county CEO against Burrell Ellis. In July he defeated three newcomers in the Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by commissioner Connie Stokes, who made an unsuccessful bid for the 4th congressional district against Hank Johnson who won a third term.

Watson said he will bring to the commission a calming voice, a wealth of legislative knowledge and political savvy.

“I’m going to be a person that steps outside of the box and show a vision for all of DeKalb with the assistance of my new colleagues,” Watson said.

Since he won an uncontested Democratic primary in July, Watson has attended budget committee sessions and met with several county department heads. He has also been present at the commission meetings where he observed the progress of the budget that he will be voting on in January.

“I can hit the ground running,” Watson said. “I like to say that I’m shovel-ready.”

In addition to the county government meeting, Watson had continued to hold his “kitchen cabinet” meetings every Saturday for the community. Started in 1997, these meetings have featured state legislators, several corporate heads and three governors.

“We have breakfast and talk about issues in DeKalb County and how we can best solve them, but also facilitate giving information to the community,” Watson said. “I’ve brought people they could use in their community to make their community better so they could be a better informed citizen and more importantly a better informed voter.”

Watson said that since the county’s economic forecast is one that is predicated on sales revenue, he wanted to bring sanity to the procurement process to ensure that county leaders take care of the residents and business interests of DeKalb County.

“We have to make sure we … ‘do DeKalb’ in our efforts to make sure that DeKalb County can flourish again in our economy,” Watson said.

For example, when the county government needs to purchase vehicles, those cars should ideally come from a DeKalb dealership, Watson said.

“Anytime you tax your people like we did with the water rates…it is a stimulus package in its own rights for citizens of DeKalb County if utilized correctly,” Watson said.

Stan's remarks on Water Rate Hikes being a Stimulus Package !

Woh ! Stan Please ! Sounds like you are on Ted Reinharts gift list !

The Leadership of DeKalb County has run a good County into the dirt with such a thought process !

It is time for a new Super Man or Woman to rise up and bring Common Sense back to the DeKalb Board of Commissioners !

Will it be Stan Watson ? We will know soon !

And if Stan turns out to be as big a BAFOON as our current Commissioners well then lets just keep him around forever just like we have the other Losers on the Dekalb Commission !

That may be the most ridiculous, stupidest comment I've ever heard from a politician. It is well known that Watson wants to be CEO one day. Looks like his philosophy is to raise taxes instead of downsizing the huge bureaucracy the Vernon Jones administration built up.

Funny, I am a county employee who is a DeKalb County Police Officer, who is way under paid, pay over $800 dollars a month from my own pocket fo benefits, had no raise in over 3 years, a father of 4, and can't afford to buy a house for my family because I do not make enough. What we need is a leader who will trim waste, but reward their public safety by providing benefits that will keep officers from leaving. Of course, another more important thing we need is a supportive community, which we do not have.

Yuposkivich, please do not think that Stan Watson ignore you because you are white. He refuse to speak to me and I am black. However, I do not think you should buy in Dekalb whenever possible even if the it is not cheaper, as long as it is not a big difference.

It is not right to buy county Vehicles from a dealer in Dekalb cty. if the price is HIGHER than another county around, or State. Let me spend the money that you have in your pocket like you do the taxpayers money and I think you would change your way of thinking in a heart beat. The Taxpayers are looking out for their pocket---not yours . I'm glad to kNow we have another crook ready to take money out of our pockets to please the politicians in Dekalb county. These people care less about you, they tell you anything and lie to you all the time to get what they want. When will the people in Dekalb cty wake up and see what is going on. Our taxes are too high, they are going to go up on our property tax, and the price of our houses is going down, somebody tell me how that makes since . Anytime the government says they are giving you a stimulus package, IT IS COSTING YOU , PERIOD. YOUR CHILDREN WILL ALSO BE PAYING ON IT. I'm for kicking all you bums out and getting some decent honest wise God fearing Country loving citizens in office.

Well, here we go again--another incoming freshman commissioner who says he's out to help DeKalb citizens. Watson made such a foolhardy statement by saying "anytime you tax people like we did with the water rates...it is a stimulus package..." Taxing citizens to death is never a solution to any economic problem. It only provides a larger pool of financial resources for city leaders to misuse, abuse and overspend on frivolous and unnecessary expenditures. A true leader would seek ways to trim and eliminate budget waste, freeze and reduce employee wages, raises and benefits and reduce citizen taxes because so many are struggling and barely making ends meet in these difficult economic times. When an additional tax burden is added to the shoulders of citizens already at survival's end, it causes some of them to have to go without food, medicine or healthcare and some even end up homeless.

When he was state legislator I tried on numerous occasions to schedule an appointment to discuss some issues of concern. No calls or emails were ever returned. Of course, I am not Black. Once again, the voters elected a showman instead of a workman.
