Expert: Long must try case in court, public

As Bishop Eddie Long faces sexual coercion charges from four former church congregants, he must make his case both in court and to the public at large to preserve his reputation, public relations and crisis management, experts said.

As Long, head of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, seeks to protect his multi-national religious empire, he and his attorneys will have to balance their desire to fight the charges exclusively in court while responding to what at least two plaintiffs and other leaders have said since the charges became public.

As of press time, Long had spoken publicly about the charges only once before his congregation on Sept. 26. He didn’t speak directly to the charges or his guilt or innocence but vowed to vigorously fight the plaintiffs in court. The four former congregants – all men – claim Long, over several years, lured them into sexual relationships with money, gifts and lavish trips across the country and the globe.

Long also released a statement through his attorney, calling the accusations false.

Stephen Brown, senior vice president at MS&L, a public relations firm in Atlanta, said he thinks Long may have waited too long to address the public.

“There are a lot of questions that the American public has, and the American public is already creating its own narrative of this story,” he said.

After the first address to his congregation, Long also held a press conference with local and national media members but declined to answer questions on the advice of his attorney, Craig Gillen. Gillen has repeatedly said he plans to fight the allegations in court. But a better approach, Brown said, would have been to take questions and perhaps decline to answer specific questions while answering others. That way, Long would appear less resistant, he said.

“The idea about completely keeping his voice out of the media discussion would give you a clean slate going into a litigation situation. It’s probably the most conservative approach when it comes to risk,” Brown said. “But it’s possible to do an interview and still not answer every question.”

All four plaintiffs are represented by B.J. Bernstein, an Atlanta defense attorney. Two plaintiffs – Spencer LeGrande and Jamaal Harris – have already given interviews to local TV news, and Bernstein released photos Long allegedly sent to one of the plaintiffs that showed him wearing tight spandex workout clothing while he stood in a bathroom. Long hasn’t addressed the photos either, and perhaps he should, Brown said.

“It seems like if there were an easy explanation for that, it would be explained very quickly,” he said. “Instead, it brings up all sorts of questions. It’s like one of those create-your-own-caption moments for the American public on the blogosphere.”

Long is likely following the advice of his attorneys, but attorneys don’t often consider the public because public perception and reaction can be difficult to control, said Jeff Dickerson, an Atlanta communications specialist. A good public relations strategy should consider the courthouse and the courtyard.

“They are very, very different and lawyers don’t acknowledge the difference. The rules of engagement are so different. In a court of law there is a constitutional presumption of innocence,” Dickerson said. “In the court of public opinion there’s no such thing.”

Long, his attorney and whoever may be crafting his responses can get together and figure what he can and cannot say before he responds, Dickerson said.

“I always tell (clients) that ‘no comment’ is a comment and is often construed by the public as a negative comment and a passive admission of guilt,” he said.

The church also must continue to operate and do good work, said Lee Echols, president of Atlanta’s Echols Group, a public relations firm. Echols said he agreed with Long’s decision to first speak from the church pulpit.

“That was the logical venue and certainly the most receptive audience for his comments,” Echols said. “He does have to be very careful in what he says and how he says it and to whom he says it because what he is facing are very sensitive, serious charges. … The damage has been done by the accusations having been put forward. Many people question whether he was strong enough in his denial. I’m quite sure his legal team is advising him to say less and not more.”

But at the end of the day, Long’s fate and, perhaps, the church’s as well, may depend on whether the charges are true. Long could benefit from leading a large religious organization, Brown said.

“Religious institutions have a lot of strong tenets about faith and about forgiveness. There’s a lot of faith in each other and there’s a lot of faith in the mission of the church,” he said. “I would still urge that he get his story out publicly in a way that’s just not in the court, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the advice that’s being heeded.”

It seems to me as though the people of New Birth have decided to follow him no matter what. It is almost like they don't care. As William commented, like his wife, some people just love the way he preaches. If that is the case, then they are certainly going to church for the wrong reason. It is also such a sad picture to see his wife walk beside him trying her best to support him with the very real questions and doubts in her mind of what he did. I think of the everyday tasks we go through as women, going shopping, going to our kids schools, doctors appointments, what a terrible shadow he's placed on her "and" his children. I wonder if she even leaves the house now. Did he preach this past Sunday and did he drag her their again in humiliation? If outsiders are afraid, surely her fears are ten times greater than any member who would dare speak out.

I agree with most of what you said, you however lost me me with the remark that "those most vocal against homosexuality usually have a deep closet filled with with many skeletons" I don't believe this statement to be true because at least since the Mosaic Law was given to the children of Israel God's people have understood that this is a great sin against God the creator.

It is not until most recent that this is heard of within the body of Christ, and if the truth be told those that partake of this are really NOT part of the body, but have been allowed to infiltrate because of the lack of righteous teaching and boldness of the true body to stand for God and Godly principles.

This however should not come as a great surprise because God warned us in His word that the Word and the Church would be under attack and that there will be a great falling away.

I do not have these skeletons in my closets and I boldly stand with the Word of God that this lifestyle is a sin against God. I however do NOT pass judgment on those outside of the body of Christ, that I leave to God, BUT when it is said of those that claim the Name of Christ I do.

This church is a cult. People need to be careful of what they say about the "bishop." His followers are everywhere and in positions of power in the county. No telling what lengths they will go to protect him. I, for one, do not feel safe living in DeKalb.

Even a "liar" would claim he is innocent, that's what concerns me about this case. He should probably step down until the investigation is over a the least. I mean if this man was a school teacher, people would insist on him stepping down until the truth was known, well this man is shepherd to at least 25,000 on a spiritual level....I think that is even more dangerous .....but that's just me.

The only simple answer is I'm innocent. That would cover a whole 60 minute Q & A in 60 seconds. C'mon this is getting silly this isn't a preacher under attack this is a preacher being exposed. Chk this out, http://www.blogtalkradio.com/centerstage/2010/09/25/under-attack

It has become a common tactic to attack anyone who speaks out against homosexuality; labeling such people as “homophobes who are covering up their own sexual identity issues.” That perspective may be true to a certain extent; however, there is another large segment of our population who simply view homosexuality as “detestable” (Lev. 18:22). In matters of conflict, Scripture is the final authority, not man’s opinions.

In reference to Eddie Long — there are no definitive answers, although one must admit that the narcissistic, thug-homo style pictures are difficult to explain. If the charges are true, then Eddie Long is clearly a hypocrite. If the charges are untrue, then Mr. Long is guilty of at least one thing; and that is he is a false teacher … an minister of darkness disguised as an angel of light ( 2 Cor. 11:1-15).

Lastly, the “Prosperity Gospel” is false doctrine and really no Gospel at all. All those who subscribe and adhere to this erroneous teaching should carefully reconsider their positions on this issue.

One would think that after Michael Jackson, parents would be very wary of costly gifts lavished on their teenaged sons. Did they forget? Anyway, here's a way to settle the question. Among the church's Longfellows group, are ugly and fat young men included, or are only handsome young men welcome (a variation on the old brown bag test)? Did the ugly and fat ones get exactly the same gifts as the accusers, all of whom are attractive? If only attractive young men received the outlandish treatment, then there's the answer. No need to ask Pastor Long, just check the photos of all the young men in Longfellows.

The man or woman of God is human just like anybody else, God is not going to curse people for discussing what they believe. You all need to stop taking that scripture of context to shield these people in minsitry that are abusing their authority and using the Word of God deceitfully for their own gain.

Your WIFE needs prayer she lacks knowledge, yes forgive him but he has to step down. He has bought reproach on God's people, at the same time there is a road to redemption, after you have been disciplined and received whatever just punishment due. Your wife is sick how can she forget about the innocent young men that he took advantage of. YOU sick too for marrying her

I have noticed many times that megachurches have usually only had one pastor... (Mars Hill church.. Rick Warren's church, Joel Osteen's , etc) Why is that, I wonder? How much of what he does is driven by his rock star status? I feel for the man because he, like all of us, is flawed, sinful and in need of God's mercy and grace. I only hope that if these allegations are true, that his church will step up and take care of these young men who have been taken advantage of by Mr. Long. I only hope that he learns some humility....

People are scared to say anything negative against Long. His members are in your workplace; they are in your neighborhood; they are in line at the supermarkets. They will stop at nothing to protect his name. It is really frightening. No one feels safe.

There are thousands of New Birth members who are willing to forgive Bishop Long even if the allegations are true. My wife (she's not a New Birth member) is a firm believer in Bishop Long and states that this happened "a long time ago" and everyone should move on and let him preach the word. I asked her does she want to listen to the words of a hypocrite? She stated that she really doesn't care....she just loves to hear him preach (not to mention walk around in those muscle shirts).

You're right, no one can destroy God's church. However men and/or women can destroy their own empires. This is Eddie Long's empire. He built it on mesmerizing his subjects using God's word. When he was found not living what he preached his empire began to crumble some time ago. All sober minded people (those who have not drank the Kool-Aid) know this. What about the young men? How many more? God's church had nothing to do with these evil acts. The New Birth Church members should have been watching as well as praying.
