Johnson to face Carter in November election

U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson fended off Vernon Jones and Connie Stokes in the Democratic primary July 20 and will face Republican Liz Carter in November’s general election.

Johnson narrowly avoided a runoff for the 4th congressional district that could have pitted him against Jones, a former DeKalb County CEO, or Stokes, a county commissioner and former state senator. He won more than 55 percent of the vote in the primary with 65 percent of district precincts reporting. Jones took about 27 percent of the vote, and Stokes earned approximately 18 percent.

The results are unofficial, however, until the secretary of state certifies them during the week of July 26.

Carter, a business consultant and Johnson’s November opponent, soundly defeated her fellow Republican challengers, grabbing 54.9 percent of the vote. Larry Gause earned 25.3 percent, Victor Armendariz won 10.1 percent and Cory Ruth a won 9.7 percent.

Johnson faced several concerns as he campaigned to keep his seat. He revealed late last year he suffers from Hepatitis C, an infectious liver disease that required he undergo treatment through February. He was also one of few Georgia congressmen who faced challengers in their own party. Democratic Reps. John Lewis, Sanford Bishop and Jim Marshall skated through the primaries unopposed.

Johnson was also briefly the center of an Internet video sensation after he said during a House committee meeting in March he feared the expansion of a U.S. military base on the island of Guam might capsize the entire territory. He later said the comment was a joke, but critics used the video’s viral popularity to question his competency.

Despite those challenges, Johnson was absent from several debates and political forums held throughout the county, including one held by The Champion Newspaper last month.

On the fundraising front, Johnson buried both his Democratic and Republican challengers, federal elections data show. Johnson raised about $439,035. Jones raised the second most with $37,570. Stokes had a war chest of about $50,000, $17,000 of which she contributed herself. All of Johnson’s Republican challengers combined raised about $65,000, $48,000 of which was given to Carter.

County residents cast votes in two other congressional races. Long-time Rep. John Lewis faced no Democratic challengers for the fifth congressional district. As of press time in the Republican corner, Fenn Little had about 58 percent of the vote over Kelly Nguyen.

In the 13th congressional district, Rep. David Scott defeated his Democratic challengers Mike Murphy and Michael Frisbee in a landslide, taking about 77 percent of the vote. Which Republican he will face in November was unclear as of press time though Mike Crane was leading five challengers with about 30 percent of the vote.

Commissioner Larry Johnson and his Leadership Skills or lack thereof must surely be questioned. District Three in DeKalb County is the Murder Capitol of DeKalb County and maybe all of Georgia. Who has seen Commissioner Jonhson's Grand Plan for turning this around ? Clue - No one for the plan does not exist. Robbing the tax paying citizens of South DeKalb is not new to DeKalb's Elected Officials. All it takes is a ride on the South Side. Lame Duck Commissioner Connie Stokes plans for Foreclosures in DeKalb comes about six years too late for South DeKalb !

Mr. Jackson,

Why do you think that is? Why does it seem like both the BOC, CEO and Board of Ed have forsaken S.DeKalb?

It isn't because Elaine Boyer holds much sway. It isn't because people in N. DeKalb are demanding another landfill. In fact, we have a majority S. DeKalb school board and BOC. Why the neglect/abuse?

Thank you Lucy may I have another one ! ~ ~ I live in District Three in South DeKalb ( The Murder Capitol of DeKalb County ). Let me give everyone a good example of the Difference in Planning for North DeKalb & South DeKalb. If the GM Land now currently in Doraville were in South DeKalb our elected officials ( Board of Commissioners & CEO )would be planning another Land Fill, Garbage Dump not a Grand Project ! I am sure that the citizens of North DeKalb, Doraville and Dunwoody have enough Politicians pandering to them already without Yanking Hank !

Looks like some folks in north DeKalb are getting a little taste of how progressives felt through 8 grueling years of Bush bungling and buffoonery. Let’s see – he took a $236 billion surplus and turned it into a trillion dollar deficit. Thanks George. He got us into two wars and didn’t have a way to pay for it so he borrowed the money. Thanks George. And when his laissez-faire, trickle-down economic policies drove our economy into a ditch – what did he do? He bailed out his buddies on Wall Street (which Rep. Johnson voted against thank you very much). Thanks George.

And now folks like Liz Carter and GTR “want to take our country back.” From whom Liz, GTR? Yeah, let’s go back to Republican rule that protects big banks, insurance companies and oil giants first over working Americans.

It’s funny – folks like Carter don’t cry when Republicans are spending our national treasure on 2 wars without paying for them, but when Democrats try to give everyday Americans the same break as Wall Street fats cats, Republicans scream bloody murder.

I agree with Jerry – how can 56% of the vote for Johnson – who faced seasoned, polished and professional politicians in Jones and Stokes – be considered “narrowly avoiding a runoff” while 55% for Carter be considered “soundly defeating” her opponents?

Guess The Champion forgot its mission.

Oh, and GTR – as far as health care is concerned – you make a good point but you’ve got it all wrong. Right now, we pay $98 million in this district to cover uncompensated care for hospitals and health care providers – a good chunk of which goes to Grady.

The whole point is that now under this law, many of these folks will have health care insurance and insurance companies will have to pay, not just kick them off their rolls because they’re sick, have pre-existing conditions or simply can’t afford it.

Oh, too late – sounds like you’re more concerned about insurance company profits than people – let me guess – you’ve got good health insurance and have never been denied good care?!

Hey, Champion, how about covering both candidates instead of just shilling for the incumbent. Aside from mentioning that Johnson will be facing her in the General Election, you provide virtually no information about Liz Carter. We turn to you for news about ALL of DeKalb county, not just part.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry...Racisist attacks! Get real. Just because a group doesn't agree with you doesn't make them racist. I don't know whats worse, your baseless "racist" comments or your mindless "mayonaise jar" comment. I'm so sick of the idiots that can't defend a position on facts, so the have to resort to rhetoric and name calling. I got news for ya, we already have health care. Just ask Grady how much free health care they give out. Actually, its not free. We (at least some of us) pay for it in taxes and buddy you ain't seen nothing yet! Do you even know what this healtcare bill means and how it will work or do you just go with what feels good and the so called "news" tells you to think. And speaking of racist, what's with your North Dekalb comment.

You can't be serious. Just as you accuse the writer of bias, your bias is obvious with the "Fox News" coment. It's either your bias or ignorance. Funny how if it doesn't fit your view or narrative it's a "bias". The article is very fair and even handed. Your right about the math and words used, but in the context of the article I think the author is simply varying the text. Everthing isn't an attack.

The bigger issue is that we demand so little in the way of standards for those we put in office. Johnson may be a nice man, but he's a joke as representative.

Interesting how obvious the author's leanings are: He writes "Johnson narrowly avoided a runoff" with over 55% of the vote, and yet Carter "soundly defeated her fellow Republican challengers, grabbing 54.9 percent of the vote." Hank narrowly gets the bid with more percentage of the vote and Carter's is a solid win with less voting percentage. Whatever happened to unbiased reporting. Guess it's gone in the days of Fox News.

Without the Votes of Congressman Hank Johnson, Healthecare for all Americans would still be a dream. Candidate Liz Carter's vision of a National Healthcare Policy is a Mayonaise Jar with a childs picture on it asking for help ! And The Yank Hank ads that smack of the same Racist attacks that have been hurled at President Obama will not fly in DeKalb County ~ No not even North DeKalb ! ~ I live in the Fifth District of DeKalb County and Congressman Hank Johnson could not have acted faster and more precise when I brought to his attention the Case of a Severely Handicapped friend living in DeKalb who had an adverse opinion rendered by a Social Security Judge without a clue. Congressman Johnson's dedicated staff secured my friends benefits without interruption in a very quick manner.Thank You Hank.

ah - I fear I still live in a district that will continue to send the likes of McKinney and now Johnson to be "my" representative - hardly representing my views and issues - those of us in North Dekalb are destined for more of the same....
