Group seeks to recognize Public Safety Champions

The concept that good deeds should be acknowledged is at the heart of a new local effort to recognize police officers and community members who have gone above and beyond.

The DeKalb County Police Alliance and The Champion Newspaper are partnering on the 2010 DeKalb Public Safety Champion Awards. They are seeking the public’s nominations of police officers, community members and/or community organizations that have had a positive impact on public safety in DeKalb County.

“A lot of people don’t realize the sacrifice our police officers make,” said Liane Levetan, co-founder of the alliance.

Officials of the alliance and the newspaper are hoping to bestow 10 awards during the fourth Annual Police Officers Ball, which is scheduled for Oct. 30 at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel.

“The Champion Newspaper owners and staff are proud and honored to support the police officers of DeKalb County–those individuals that keep us safe and secure and aid us in the enjoyment of a happy and healthy lifestyle,” said Carolyn Glenn, publisher of The Champion. “I believe that if we collectively take care of our officers, they will be better able to take care of us. In addition to our personal support, we hope to assist in identifying and connecting all the resources that can bring aid and benefit to our officers.”

Information on sponsorships and tickets can be found at www.dekalbpolicealliance.org.

The ball is the culmination of the alliance’s annual fundraising campaign, proceeds of which fund $100,000 life insurance policies for police officers and a new program to provide scholarships to officers who want to continue their education.

Those who nominate an individual or group will have to provide an explanation of why they deserve the award. Deborah Spector, executive director of the alliance, said there is no specific criteria, and the judges are relying on the community to determine why persons and organizations are worthy of the award.
