DeKalb County Police is investigating the way it handled an incident involving outstanding warrants against county commissioner Sharon Barnes-Sutton, county spokeswoman Sheila Edwards said.
Barnes-Sutton was involved in a minor traffic accident on Wednesday, Jan. 20. When police ran Barnes-Sutton’s identification through the Georgia Crime Information Center database, it was discovered that there were four outstanding warrants issued a year ago out of Gwinnett County for bad checks.
Officers on the scene of the accident advised Barnes-Sutton to go directly to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office to resolve the matter and did not notify the sheriff’s office.
The investigation is ongoing and could be wrapped up by the end of the week, Edwards said. None of the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, she said.
Meanwhile, Barnes-Sutton went to the merchant the next day, Jan. 21, and paid the amount due, according to a spokeswoman at Gwinnett County Magistrate Court. The four checks totaled $1,270.37. After payment was received, the warrants were recalled, the court official said.
