Two DeKalb County high school football coaches took other jobs this week outside the county.
Chamblee coach Michael Collins accepted an offer Dec. 15 to become the head coach at Wheeler High School and M.L. King’s Corey Jarvis was named the new head football coach at Duluth High School on Dec, 16.
Jarvis is expected to leave for Duluth in January after official release by the DeKalb County School Board and approval by the Gwinnett County School Board.
Collins was 13-9 in two seasons at Chamblee and took the Bulldogs to the playoffs both years.
Jarvis, who also was interviewed by the Wheeler job, was 49-11 in five seasons at M.L. King. Jarvis led the Lions to the playoffs in each of the past five seasons and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2007.
Both coaches will take over programs that have struggled in recent years. Duluth, in Gwinnett County, has not had a winning season since 1994 and has won only six games in the past six seasons. Wheeler, a state power in the 1980s and early 1990s, has lost 21 straight games.
More details to follow in the Dec. 24 edition of The Champion Newspaper.
I really hate to see My Coach go but at the same time I'll firmly support any and every decision he makes. I PROMISE this will be a MAJOR LOSS to Dekalb County and steal for Duluth High School regardless of the many thousands they've given him. He was not just a coach, he was a father figure (THE ONLY FATHER FIGURE I HAD!), a teacher, and a great example of success. He leads by example and told all of his players to do the same. He gave us hope and he disciplined his players with tough love whether you were the best or worst player on the team. He also kept me and so many other people from dropping out, getting bad grades, and actually going to jail; Coach Jarvis has gotten me out of Hand Cuffs twice and I thank God all the time for that........ He'd always say his goal was to make us champions in life and on the field and i promise he has honestly done that to me!!! What I've mentioned above is only a fraction of the many things he's done! I dont know too much about duluth but trust and believe they wont have another losing season with Corey B Jarvis up there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn't this what school is about?
The DeKalb County School System's Athletics Department is incredibly poorly run, and Ron Seebree is in way over his head. The Board of Ed should bring in a top consultant for a full porgram review, and there should also be a forensic audit, as there are some questionable contracts and purchases.
We need to get back to having stadiums at each school and get away from the complete mess that is the centralized DCSS Athletics Dept.
GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
