DeKalb County to honor 2012 Olympians Sept. 20

DeKalb County will hold a special “Olympic Tribute & Celebration” honoring DeKalb’s two Olympic medalists, DeeDee Trotter and Angelo Taylor.

The tribute is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, on the Square in Decatur, located at 101 East Court Square, Decatur.

Trotter, a Cedar Grove High School graduate, won both gold and bronze track-and-field medals in the 4x400m and 400m, respectively. Taylor, a Southwest DeKalb High School alumnus, won a silver track-and-field medal in the 4x400m during the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London, England.

“They are truly the world’s – and DeKalb County’s – Olympic Champions,” DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis stated. “We are very pleased to have this opportunity to invite everyone in DeKalb County to meet and greet our Olympic champions.”

“With the support of our DeKalb County School Board, we are placing a special focus on our youth to attend,” Ellis stated. “In addition to inspiring future Olympic stars, we are encouraging them and their parents to come see two world champions who attended school in DeKalb County just as the students are doing now.  Because we know active participation in youth athletic programs is a way to help curb youth violence.”

There is no charge to attend or for parking.
