Law enforcement captures man sought in shooting death

The DeKalb Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Squad has captured Marcus D. Ventress, who was sought in connection with the May 26 death of Ryan Guider, 19, whom he allegedly shot several times in the chest with a small caliber handgun. The killing was said to be an act of vengeance as police say that Guider burglarized the home of Ventress stealing jewelry, cash and drugs, and punching Ventress’ mother.

Ventress was also wanted for aggravated assault in connection with an act in which he allegedly fired a .22 caliber handgun into an apartment at 5810 Treecrest Parkway.  Police state that he shot into the apartment because it was thought to be the residence of Guider. 

Ventress served a six-year sentence in federal prison on a drug trafficking charge and has been imprisoned in Indiana on a cocaine possession charge.  He was on parole and probation for these charges. 

After Guider’s funeral June 7 at Victory for the World Church in unincorporated Stone Mountain an altercation broke out in the church parking lot, where Carlos Henderson Jr., 19, and Delmetrius Heard, 28, shot and killed each other.

County announces July Work Readiness workshops

The July 2012 schedule has been set for DeKalb County’s “Work Readiness Workshops” offered at DeKalb Workforce Development.  The workshops support the ONE DeKalb Works initiative by providing work readiness tips and services. Training topics include resume writing, interviewing techniques, personal branding and marketing, and networking.

The workshops are designed to empower job seekers with essential work readiness skills needed to secure employment. The workshops are held at DeKalb Workforce Development at 320 Church St., Decatur. 

Below are scheduled times and days for the work readiness workshops for July 2012. The Workforce Development office will be closed Wednesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
