There are a number of ways for people to relive stress. It’s a good thing for folks in the Oakhurst area that when Amy Kiefer is stressed she bakes.

Kiefer, chief cupcake baker, and her cousin Catherine Pfitzer, chief cupcake marketer, are the owners of Sugar Moon Bake Shop.

The cupcakes are the byproducts of Kiefer’s stress relieving efforts. “I’m not a classically trained baker, I just did it for the love and passion of cupcakes,” she said. Both women are former non-profit execs who left their 9-to-5 jobs and dedicated themselves to the cupcake business. After spending a couple of years perfecting the recipes Sugar Moon Bake Shop was born.

“It’s more than a full-time job [for us],” Pfitzer said.

Sugar Moon Bake Shop offers a variety of cupcake flavors including unusual ones such as banana pudding, vanilla rosewater, key lime, vanilla buttermilk strawberry and red velvet. In addition to cupcakes there are locally made gourmet ice cream from High Road, handcrafted oatmeal crème pies and cookies.

Sugar Moon Bake Shop is on East Lake Drive, Decatur. “It’s the perfect place for a cupcake shop,” said Kiefer, who lives within walking distance of the shop. The duo expressed that the Oakhurst community has been very supportive and receptive of Sugar Moon. And the name Sugar Moon? It came from an old song Kiefer was listening to while driving.
