Senior Connections raises more than $100,000
More than $10,000 was raised during the Senior Connections fourth annual “Senior Prom” June 9 at the Thalia N. Carlos Hellenic Center in Atlanta.
Senior Connections is a service organization that provides programs designed to help seniors “age in place” throughout metro Atlanta. At the event James B. Miller Jr. (Jim), chairman and CEO of Fidelity Southern Corporation, was presented with the Senior Connections’ 2012 Community Connections Award. The award, established in 2009, recognizes those who are outstanding business and community leaders who have given back significantly to the communities in which they live and work.
Miller received the award from DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis, who also presented a proclamation declaring June 9, 2012 as James B. Miller and Senior Connections Day in DeKalb County.
Last day discounted pet adoption fees
Today, June 15, is the last day residents of DeKalb County can adopt a pet from DeKalb County Animal Services for a discounted fee of $60.
The county joined a nationwide effort to increase the number of pet adoptions by offering discounted fees and pledging not to euthanize pets for one day, June 11.
DeKalb County Animal Services is located at 845 Camp Road in Decatur.
DeKalb summit on youth violence and interfaith candlelight vigil
DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis will host the Summit on Youth Violence June 20, 7-9 p.m. at Victory for the World Church, located at 1170 North Hairston Road in Stone Mountain.
Participants include youth, community, civic, social, elected, educational and interfaith leaders who will discuss and address the issue of youth violence.
The event is free and open to the public, and participants are encouraged to bring candles for the vigil. Community organizations addressing youth violence are invited to set up a table at the event.
