Family rescued from burning apartment

A family of eight was rescued from their burning apartment May 22 by DeKalb County firefighters at Kensington Manor apartments near Decatur.

Firefighters used an extension ladder to rescue five children and three adults from the balcony of their third floor apartment, according to DeKalb County Fire Rescue spokesman Norman Augustin. The adults were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and the children were taken to Egleston for smoke inhalation, he said.

The fire was contained to the one apartment, but several other units sustained water and smoke damage. Georgia Power turned off the power on six units, Augustin said. Firefighters received the call at approximately 7:40 p.m.

Food that caught fire on the stove was the cause of the blaze, Augustin said.
