Georgia Supreme Court upholds murder conviction
The Georgia Supreme Court on March 19 upheld the murder conviction of a Lithonia man who was found guilty of murdering his roommate.
Renato Adel was indicted in August 2007 of killing his roommate, Mesfin Asfaw. Evidence in the case showed that Adel dismembered Asfaw’s body and set it on fire.
Adel’s trial in April 2009 ended in a mistrial, but in another trial five months later Adel was found guilty on all charges. He was sentenced to life in prison for malice murder plus 10 years for theft by taking. Adel’s motion for a new trial was denied in 2011 and the case was transferred to the Georgia Supreme Court in May 2011.
Second suspect arrested in connection with Stone Mountain killing
A second man was arrested March 19 in connection with the shooting death of DeAngelo Hickson at a Stone Mountain apartment complex.
Aaron Jewann Robinson, 20, of Lawrenceville, was arrested by DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office fugitive squad members. Eighteen-year-old Shaquel Heppard of Stone Mountain was arrested three days earlier. Both were charged with murder and are being held in the DeKalb County Jail without bond.
