Groundbreaking ceremony set for Decatur’s Kitchen Garden
The Global Growers Network of Refugee Family Services will celebrate the grand opening of Decatur’s Kitchen Garden with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 14, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. The market garden is a collaboration with the United Methodist Children’s Home, Oakhurst Community Garden Project and Edible Yard & Garden, with support from the city of Decatur and DeKalb County Board of Health. Speakers for the event include Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd and S. Elizabeth Ford, district health director of the DeKalb County Board of Health. The Kitchen Garden is designed to foster community, offer education about healthy food traditions and growing practices, and enhance biodiversity through sustainable resource management. The groundbreaking will take place at the United Methodist Children’s Home, 500 S. Columbia Drive in Decatur.
Stream cleanup will be topic of community forums
A series of meetings is planned to generate public comment on DeKalb County’s Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP). The purpose of the project is to provide one-time trash and debris removal from the banks and streambeds of South River and South Fork Peachtree and Snapfinger creeks to improve the overall quality and sustainability of the designated streams. The meetings will be held in the general area of the streams. The first meeting is scheduled for March 12 at the Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams Library, 6:30-8 p.m. The topic of discussion will be the South Fork Peachtree Creek basin. The library is located at 1282 McConnell Drive in Decatur.
County government channel wins awards
DeKalb County Television (DCTV) Channel 23 has won three Pegasus Awards of Honor and four Pegasus Awards of Distinction for its productions. The Pegasus Awards recognize educational, medical and government video content creators. DCTV won Pegasus Awards of Honor for Captain Healthy and Safety Dog Puppet Show package, Marquel's Pledge public service announcement and the Porter Sanford Arts Center Profile package. Also, DCTV earned the Pegasus Award of Distinction for DeKalb Water Sewer CIP Tour, Inside DeKalb #131, Let’s Talk DeKalb – Natural Resources Special Edition and The Greener Side of DeKalb County.
