Memorial Drive Merchants’ Association to hold monthly meeting

The monthly meeting of the Memorial Drive Merchants’ Association is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Businesses will have the opportunity to sign up for the new Memorial Drive public safety and security system presented by Village Defenders. There will also be an update on Memorial Drive revitalization.

The meeting will be held at Georgia Perimeter College in Room 2240 of the N building located at 555 N. Indian Creek Drive in Clarkston.

DeKalb County’s top traffic engineer to be featured at book discussion and signing

The Wesley Chapel William C. Brown Library will feature a book discussion and signing with Peggy Vonsherie Allen, author of The Pecan Orchard, Journey of a Sharecropper's Daughter, on Feb. 29.

The Pecan Orchard is the true story of the struggle, survival and ultimate success of a large Black family in south Alabama during the middle decades of the 20th century.  Visitors can meet the author, and hear how this family, descendants of slaves and sharecroppers, lifted themselves out of poverty to achieve the American dream of property ownership.

Allen is DeKalb County’s head traffic engineer.

The event will be 7-8 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel-William C. Brown Library located at 2861 Wesley Chapel Road, Decatur.

Leadership DeKalb accepting nominations, holding open houses

Leadership DeKalb is now accepting nominations for its class of 2013.

Nomination forms can be found on the group’s website at www.leadershipdekalb.org and must be completed and returned by Friday, March 9.

Leadership DeKalb is holding three open houses during which members are encouraged to attend along with their nominees.
