Smoke inhalation causes man's death in fire

An elderly man was found dead in his apartment early Feb. 15 by firefighters responding to a call at the Memorial Heights apartments at 1460 Memorial Drive SE, according to Atlanta Fire Rescue Department spokesman Capt. J.L. Bundrige.

The 89-year-old man died of smoke inhalation, according to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's office.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 4:28 a.m. Firefighters found a small fire with smoke to within two feet of the floor. Fire investigators determined the fire started from the use of a hotplate that was used close to combustible materials, fire officials said. There was no indication that the apartment had a working smoke detector. The man was found lying on the floor between the bathroom and bedroom.
