Stone Mountain suspect held in police officer’s death

Police have charged 22-year-old Chasity Nicole Jones of Stone Mountain with first-degree homicide by vehicle, drunken driving and failure to yield to a person directing traffic in connection with the death of Atlaanta Police Department Senior Police Officer Gail D. Thomas, according to media reports. The 46-year-old officer was struck and killed the evening of Jan. 24 as she was investigating a wreck on an interstate ramp. Jones is being held in the Fulton County jail without bond. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 9 in Fulton County Superior Court.

Funeral services for Officer Thomas were held Jan. 30 at Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Teen shoots self playing with gun

A 15-year-old Decatur area boy was taken to an area hospital the afternoon of Jan. 29 and treated for what police said is a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the teenager was playing with a firearm that he brought to 1077 Longshore Drive in Decatur when it discharged and struck him, causing minor injuries. Charges related to the incident are pending.

Night club shooting leaves four in hospital

A shooting outside a Stone Mountain nightclub early the morning of Jan. 28 resulted in two men and two women being taken to area hospitals. An argument over a spilled drink started inside Jay’s Place Club and continued in the parking lot after the club closed, according to police, who reported that the two men who were involved in the initial argument and women bystanders were shot at approximately 3:50 a.m. Police said that two people in a dark-colored vehicle drove past a crowd standing on the sidewalk and shot into the crowd. Suspects have not yet identified.

Stone Mountain man killed in shooting incident

A 29-year-old man was shot to death in a parking lot on Summit Lake Drive in Stone Mountain, according to DeKalb County Police, who said witnesses reported an altercation among three men prior to the shooting. Two of the men fired weapons and one was shot, according to police. The gunshot victim was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said they are still trying to determine what role each of the men had in the events.
