Former state representative Maddox dies

Former state Rep. George Maddox of Decatur died Jan. 1. He was a candidate in 2008 for the DeKalb County Commission and served as a state legislator from 1996-2004. DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis issued this statement: “The State of Georgia and the people of DeKalb County in particular have lost a man of principle and virtue. George Maddox was a true public servant who always put people ahead of politics. My prayers are with his family at this time.” Funeral arrangements are to be announced later by Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Homes.

Representative George Maddox was my friend. George, a Decatur native knew everybody. He was a genuine person, cared deeply about the well-being of DeKalb County. He loved his family and his friends. When I think about his life I am reminded of a saying by Dr Martin Luther. "The measure of a man is not what he does in time of comfort and convenience, but what he does in time of conflict and controversy." George labor of love will remain with us for many years.
