Stabbing investigation leads to SWAT standoff

Police capture barricaded man, take him to hospital

A three-hour standoff in a DeKalb County apartment complex ended with SWAT teams and tear gas on Oct. 19, police said.

Police arrived at Eagles Run Apartments on Bouldercrest Road in Atlanta in response to a stabbing shortly before 4 p.m., county police spokeswoman Meeka Parish said. A contractor working for the apartment complex had been stabbed several times near the complex’s tennis courts and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Detectives were led to a suspect in an apartment within the complex, but when they arrived, the man barricaded himself inside and did not respond to repeated attempts from police to speak with him, Parish said.

The county’s SWAT unit was called to the apartment complex, and after several additional failed attempts to contact the man, the SWAT team shot tear gas and entered the apartment at about 9 p.m., she said.

They subdued the man and drove him to a local hospital where he was placed under observation, Parish said. Detectives are still working to determine whether he stabbed the contractor.

Parish did not release the names of the suspect or the victim, and no additional information was available as of press time.

A woman answering the phone at the apartment complex directed calls to the managing firm, New Rock Co. Officials there could not be reached for comment.
