Wrestling: Southwest DeKalb wins region, sends 12 to state

DeKalb won its first region wrestling championship since 2006 and qualified 12 wrestlers for the AAAA state sectionals this weekend at Loganville. A total of 99 county wrestlers representing 16 schools qualified at three region meets last weekend for this weekend’s sectionals.
Fifty-seven wrestlers from Region 6-AAAA, representing Southwest DeKalb, Marist, Dunwoody, Tucker, Lakeside, Lithonia, Miller Grove, Redan and Chamblee, will participate in the sectionals at Loganville. Fourteen wrestlers who qualified from Stephenson and M.L. King will participate in the Class AAAAA sectionals at Central Gwinnett and 29 wrestlers who qualified from Druid Hills, McNair, Towers, Arabia Mountain and St. Pius will compete in the AAA sectionals at Woodward Academy.
In the Region 6-AAAA tournament last weekend, Southwest DeKalb won three weight classes en route to winning the region 178.5-146 over second-place Marist. Redan and Tucker also had three wrestlers win individual titles.
Stephenson placed second to East Coweta 178-153 in the Region 2-AAAAA championships. Three Stephenson wrestlers won individual titles and M.L. King had two individual champions to help the Lions place fifth in the team standings.
In Region 5-AAA, Druid Hills edged McNair by a half-point for second place in the team standings, 129-128.5. Woodward Academy easily won the team championship with 247.5 points. Both Druid Hills and Arabia Mountain, which placed fifth in the team standings, had two individual champions.
Southwest DeKalb qualified the most wrestlers for the state tournament among county teams, followed by Stephenson with 10, and Druid Hills and Dunwoody with nine each.
