Basketball: Stephenson girls, M.L. King boys advance

The Stephenson girls and the M.L. King boys are the first two DeKalb County basketball teams to earn state playoffs berths with victories Feb. 14 in the Region 2-AAAAA tournament.
Stephenson earned its 12th straight playoff berth with a 65-35 victory over Newnan in the opening round of the 2-AAAAA girls' basketball tournament at Westlake. The No. 5-ranked Jaguars improved to 22-4. Stephenson advances to face Luella on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Westlake for the opportunity to advance to the Region 2-AAAAA finals.
M.L. King improved to 17-9 with a 60-52 victory over Luella at Westlake to secure a state
tournament berth. The Lions will return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2010 and face Westlake at 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the Region 2-AAAAA semifinals in an effort to secure a home game in the first round.
