The Marist School racked up four state championship titles over the weekend bringing its total for the 2008-2009 school year to eight. The War Eagles claimed titles in boys and girls tennis and boys and girls soccer.

After 12 consecutive state championships, the Marist girls finished second and third in 2007 and 2008 respectively. “The next two years were tough on the girls. The goal was to get back to the top,” said head coach Francis Kissel.
Elizabeth Vermillion played singles this year and was 11-0. Freshmen Mary Elizabeth Shutley and Erin McDevitt went undefeated in doubles play the entire year. Solid performances in doubles took pressure off the singles players. Shannon Murdy’s win in the finals came after battling a tough opponent from Glynn Academy.

The Marist boys’ varsity tennis team had a championship at its finger tips for the past three year. After a heartbreaking loss to Alpharetta in 2006, Woodward Academy bested the War Eagles in 2007 and 2008. “This year, the guys, particularly the seniors, were focused on winning that final match, the state championship,” said head coach Mike Burns.

“That was the goal all year—nothing less.” An infusion of new talented freshmen, Brian Krouskos and Zack Mason, was extra edge that gave the coach some peace of mind. Andrew Mulick played nearly flawless tennis the finals and Hunter Anderson played to split sets on a day when he wasn’t feeling well. Doubles team Matt Colonnese and Krouskos proved to be the best doubles team in AAAA by winning comfortably.
The 2008 defending state champions amassed a 19-0 record last year. They continued the dominance in 2009 going 21-1 and keeping the championship cup. “I think in sports people are always looking for who scored the most goals, but it’s really a team effort,” said head coach Sergio Stadler. Laura Eddy earned high school All-American honors as a junior and scored 34 goals and had 18 assists during the 2009 season. Eddy along with Mary Coffed teamed up to make a dynamic scoring duo, but did so in an unselfish manner, according to Stadler. The Lady War Eagles celebrated their 20th year in existence last year.
