Police: Don’t use guns to celebrate the Fourth
From staff reports
The DeKalb County Police Department will be increasing patrols during Fourth of July festivities and is asking the public to refrain from celebratory gunfire in a new public service announcement.
Shooting into the air creates a serious threat to public safety and ties up valuable police resources, the department said. Discharging a weapon is a misdemeanor offense and carries a punishment of up to one year in prison.
The community is also reminded sparklers and other non-explosive fireworks sold in local stores are the only form of legal fireworks in Georgia.
Anyone reporting illegal fireworks or celebratory gunfire is asked to call the DeKalb County Police non-emergency number at 404-294-2911.
