Michelle Malone to headline Decatur’s 9th annual BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Festival
The ninth annual Decatur Barbecue, Blues & Bluegrass Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15. Gates will open at 4 p.m. in Oakhurst’s Harmony Park, with live music until 10 p.m. This year’s lineup includes John Emil, Flat Rock Bluegrass Band, the DejaBlue Grass Band, Delta Moon, and headliner Michelle Malone. For the younger set, the Decatur Recreation Department will be operating a children’s area with face painting, inflatables and other age-appropriate activities.
Five Star Barbecue will be serving pulled pork and chicken, while O.B.’s will feature a new menu with ribs, sausage and more. Decatur’s Badda Bing will provide vegetarian fare. There will also be plenty of cold beer to cool off with and to enjoy with the food offerings.
Admission is $10 for adults 21 and older, $5 for ages 11-20, and children 10 and younger will be admitted free. Coolers will not be permitted inside the festival venue.
Decatur’s coolest hot-weather event is also a fundraiser, with all profits channeled directly into the Decatur community. It is presented again this year by the Community Center of South Decatur, the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association and Decatur Active Living. Each organization receives 20 percent of the net proceeds of the event. The remaining 40 percent is given to the BBQ, Blues & Bluegrass Small Grant Program, which awards grants in amounts from $500 to $5,000 to support projects benefiting the City of Decatur community.
Since 2006 nearly $100,000 has been raised by the festival to benefit the Decatur community, according to event coordinator, Kara Ansotegui.
According to Ansotegui, attendance at the 2008 festival was more than 5,500.
