Special Events

July 12. 11th Annual Business Associate Event. The American Business Women’s Association Sphinx II Chapter invites the public to attend the 11th Annual Business Associate Event from 2 until 4 p.m. held at the Wesley Chapel Brown Library, 2861, Wesley Chapel Rd., Decatur. The guest speaker will be Rosemary Willingham, 2008 chairperson of ABWA Atlanta Area Council. Those present will have the opportunity to meet the 2008-2009 scholarship recipient and Woman of the Year. There will be food, door prizes and entertainment. Tuesday evening lectures. “Looking at the current Middle East geopolitical scene through the lens of scripture” is presented in biblically illuminating lectures by a world traveled Jewish believer. Learn how end times and messianic prophesies from the Hebrew scriptures are fulfilled. Regularly Scheduled Meetings

Free Motivational Workshop at DCVB. Attendees of this workshop will be taught to seek the straightest path to the most positive attitude. The workshop is suitable for employees from upper management to front office personnel. Taught by Renny Roker, this class seeks to maximize the potential of each individual to enhance productivity and work toward a positive bottom line. Roker’s presentation is designed to motivate participants to eliminate the negative influences and capitalize on their positive attributes. All workshops are held at DeKalb Convention & Visitors Bureau, 1957 Lakeside Parkway, Suite 510, Tucker. The next class will be held on July 16 from 8:45 a.m. to noon. Keep Them Coming Back - Customer Service. Bob Beeland teaches attendees the value of true customer service. Beeland emphasizes that customer service is mediocre at its best in today’s society. DCVB’s customer service class originates from the desire for guests in DeKalb to have such a welcoming visit that they will want to return. One of the best ways to ensure this is by providing quality customer service. Beeland teaches participants how easily this can be achieved. DeKalb Community Service Board Meetings. The DeKalb Community Service Board, a public, nonprofit, behavioral health-care agency, will conduct its monthly meetings in the Bohan Auditorium of the Richardson Health Center, 445 Winn Way in Decatur. The monthly meeting schedule for 2008 is as follows: July 15, Sept. 16, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18. The public is invited to attend.

Survivors Network for those abused by priests and other clergy (SNAP) support group meets the fourth Thursday of each month from 7 until 8:30 p.m. If you or someone you know has been sexually abused by clergy, this group is for you. Volunteers Needed

DeKalb Rape Crisis Center is looking for dedicated volunteers to staff its 24-hour crisis line. The organization also needs volunteers to serve as hospital companions for rape survivors. Its summer 2008 training begins in early June. The crisis center is also looking for RAINN Online Hotline volunteers, volunteers to be part of its speakers’ bureau, outreach and special events committees. County recruiting for youth mentoring program. DeKalb County is recruiting youth and mentors for its Meeting of the Hearts (MOTH) mentoring program, which connects youth, ages 4-18, who have incarcerated parents to caring adult mentors. Adults interested in mentoring or referring youth for the program should review the following requirements and e-mail hstemp@co.dekalb.ga.us or call (404) 270-1178 to enroll.


Requirements for youth:
• Have one or both parents who are incarcerated or have been released from jail or prison
• Be between the ages of 4 and 18
• Reside in DeKalb County.


Requirements for mentors:

• Be at least 20 years old
• Plan to live in metro Atlanta for the next 12 months
• Attend an initial mentor training and periodic in-service trainings
• Commit to meet with mentee for at least one hour each week over the next 10 months.
• Communicate regularly and openly with staff regarding mentoring activities
• Be clean and sober for the past five years and commit to remaining so during mentorship
• Be able to satisfactorily pass a background check.
 
LifeLink volunteers needed. LifeLink of Georgia is seeking volunteers to assist with educational programs pertaining to organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Georgia. Volunteer activities include public speaking, staffing information tables at driver’s license offices and health fairs, presentations to nursing and medical staff and more. Volunteer for seniors. Meals On Wheels volunteers are needed in DeKalb neighborhoods. Deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound senior neighbors in your area. There are three pickup locations: Chamblee, Scottdale and Lithonia. To volunteer, call Senior Connections at (770) 216-2574. Volunteer orientations for May will be May 5 and May 19 at 1 p.m.
