The public got a chance to walk the halls of Arabia Mountain High School April 18. And for the first time in a while, it’s easy being green.
The school will serve as DeKalb’s environmentally friendly high school. Arabia Mountain is slated to provide parents and students with instructional programs for college preparation and career development, according to its Web site. The instructional program will emphasize parental involvement and students support. Students will wear uniforms at the school.
The $40 million school is expected to realize a 20 percent savings in operating costs every year as a result of the design. The restrooms use waterless urinals and materials for the building were used from suppliers less than 500 miles away to curb fuel costs. Many of the rooms take full advantage of natural light.
“For students to really embrace the environment, they have to interact with the environment,” said Arabia High School Principal Angela Pringle. “We want to provide field experience for the students and get them involved in the Arabia Mountain Heritage area as an outdoor classroom.”
